Saint Mary's College Appeal Denied

The Town Council considered the Saint Mary’s College (SMC) appeal regarding operating hours for its intramural field lights at its February 27 meeting. SMC had appealed the Planning Director’s decision to turn the lights off at 9:00 pm, rather than 10:00 pm. The decision had followed a provision in the Design Review Board’s March 2011 approval that stated if noise was an issue, the planning staff would investigate the problem and could require SMC to turn off its lights at 9:00 pm. Members of the public and SMC presented testimony regarding the noise issues associated with the intramural fields at night. The Council voted 3 to 2 to deny the SMC appeal. As part of the motion, the Council encouraged SMC to take steps to reduce the impacts of noise and glare from the lights on the neighborhood and return with a request to reinstate the 10:00 pm time to turn off the lights.
