Rheem Boulevard Sinkhole Repair Update - September 29, 2017

The sinkhole repair is proceeding well with the new Reinforced Concrete Pipe (RCP) installed and encased with a slurry backfill. The contractor placed 17 segments of 8-foot diameter RCP in the trench, with each weighing 28,000 pounds, the equivalent weight of a school bus. Each RCP segment needed an 18 wheeler truck and trailer to deliver it to the site and an oversized crane, the height of a 14-story building, to place it in the trench. To fill the trench required almost 40,000 cubic feet of backfill material weighing nearly 5 million pounds. Remaining work includes installing a manhole structure, backfilling the remaining trench, restoring the traffic signal and completing site improvements. The project is still expected to be completed by the end of October.
