Town Of Moraga

Rheem Boulevard Sinkhole Repair Update - July 27, 2017

The Town’s contractor, McGuire and Hester (MH), began mobilizing equipment, material and setting up security fencing around the project site on Monday, July 17, to repair an approximately 130-foot long section of the 96-inch diameter corrugated metal pipe culvert within the Rheem Boulevard and Center Street Sinkhole. Construction is expected to be completed in mid-October, barring any significant utility or weather delays. To expedite and complete critical aspects of this repair project prior to the rainy season, the contractor has been granted extended working hours, Monday through Saturday from 6:00 am to 7:00 pm.
Construction Update: On Wednesday, July 19, MH closed down the roadway at the intersection of Rheem Boulevard and Center Street and set up an extensive detour route around the closure. This past week MH has been potholing to determine the exact location of underground utilities and meeting with those utility companies affected, including East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD), Central Costa Costa Sanitary District, AT&T and Comcast. Next week MH will begin relocating utilities in conflict with the excavation work needed to replace the 24 foot deep storm drain culvert. After affected utilities have been relocated or stabilized, MH will begin drilling 40 foot deep holes to place 36 steel I-beams to brace the trench shoring to facilitate digging of the deep storm drain trench.
Traffic Alert: Please be aware of the changed traffic patterns and flow in this construction area. The Town advises all motorists to drive slowly and safely through the affected areas. Please remember that the shopping centers are open for business and drivers should look for and yield to pedestrians. Click on the following link for the detour route map. Thank you for helping us keep Moraga safe. EBMUD continues the replacement of a major water line along Moraga Way from Orchard Drive to Glorietta Boulevard that is significantly impacting Moraga Way traffic. During peak periods, Moraga Way traffic will be routed around the construction area onto the parallel Orchard Road. Please expect delays when traveling through this area. Project Information
