Town Of Moraga

Plastic Bag Ban Legislation

At their April 24 meeting, the Town Council discussed two bills that are currently being considered by the California State Legislature that address the use of plastic shopping bags. The bills would institute a state-wide ban of single-use carryout plastic bags while also requiring that stores provide or sell a reusable bag. This proposed legislation that aims to divert some solid waste from the state’s landfills and reduce litter, already has the support of the California Grocers Association and the Central Contra Costa Solid Waste Authority. While some cities, including neighboring Lafayette, are considering a community-based ban on plastic bags, the state-wide ban would create a uniform system for all counties, cities, and retailers. The Town Council discussed sending formal letters in support of these two state bills, but decided it would be inappropriate to express support without more feedback from the Moraga Chamber of Commerce and the Moraga community.
